South Africa’s (SA) long-term investment in its track and field relay programme is yielding major dividends, as the men’s 4×400-metre squad secures a coveted nomination for National Team of the Year at the upcoming SA Sports Awards.
The nomination caps off a remarkable period of international achievement for the unit, highlighted by a silver medal at the World Athletics Relays and a bronze medal performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Athletics SA (ASA) High-Performance Manager Hezekiel Sepeng praised the team’s recognition, attributing their success to deliberate long-term strategy, technical refined execution, and squad cohesion.
“It shows that the relay project is having a real impact when it comes to athletics. They truly deserve it,” Sepeng said. “When you look at what they achieved, securing silver at the World Relays and following that up with a bronze medal at the World Championships in Tokyo, it proves that this structured approach is working.”
Following the breakthrough of the men’s long-sprint squad, ASA’s high-performance department now turns its focus to replicating the same structured development pipeline within the women’s relay programme ahead of the upcoming global championship cycle.
