South Africa’s (SA) eight major metropolitan municipalities are set for a massive face-lift after the New Development Bank greenlit a blockbuster $1billion loan to rescue crumbling urban infrastructure.
The funding, approved during the Brazil, Russia, India, China, and SA (BRICS)-backed bank’s board meeting at its headquarters in Shanghai, will pump billions of Rands directly into the country’s struggling economic hubs. The massive cash injection is earmarked for immediate upgrades to basic municipal services, focusing squarely on stabilising erratic electricity grids, fixing broken water and sanitation systems, and sorting out failing waste management services.
The money will be split across SA’s primary metros, which have been bearing the brunt of infrastructure neglect and rolling blackouts. The municipalities getting a slice of the pie are Johannesburg, Cape Town, eThekwini, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Nelson Mandela Bay, Mangaung, and Buffalo City.
For millions of residents, the rollout is a long-overdue lifeline aimed at stopping constant water outages and keeping the lights on. Economists also expect the massive capital boost to give local businesses some much-needed breathing room by cutting down on the costly service disruptions that have hammered productivity in key commercial nodes.
According to the lender, the upgrade programme ties directly into SA’s National Development Plan 2030, while also meeting United Nations targets for clean water, affordable energy, and sustainable communities.
