Impala Platinum Mine in Rustenburg, North West, South Africa (SA) plans to adopt advanced technology

Impala Platinum Mine in Rustenburg, North West, South Africa (SA), has announced plans to adopt advanced technology aimed at reducing fatalities and extending the mine’s operational lifespan.

Chief Executive Moses Motlhageng said the company hopes discussions at the ongoing G20 Summit will encourage policies that support these initiatives.

Over 30 deaths have been reported at SA mines so far this year, highlighting the critical need for improved safety measures.

Motlhageng stressed the importance of prioritising worker safety. “We need to mine without loss of life. Our goal is to extract minerals safely while remaining globally competitive. We have seen that the use of AI can significantly reduce human error in safety processes and systems. We plan to accelerate the adoption of these technologies and invest in pilot programmes to explore their potential for safer mining operations.”
