SA data shows that mining production increased by 2.5% in December
Statistic South Africa (SA) data shows that mining production increased by 2.5% in December 2025, compared to the same month in 2024.
The main contributors to the upward lift in output were iron ore, up 19% and manganese ore up 40%.
Despite the price of platinum jumping to all time high levels, production of Platinum Group Metals (PGM) actually declined by over 7%.
In terms of mineral sales, overall prices rose by a whopping 485%, year on year, with the largest contributor being gold which was up 270%, while PGM prices were up over 50%.
The prices of gold and PGMs have benefited as investors have decided to plough their cash into safe haven assets, given geo-economic and political uncertainties.
