SA announces temporary fuel levy reductions to relief household expenses

South African (SA) motorists are set for much-needed relief at the pumps following significant, temporary cuts to general fuel levies announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana in his 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement.

Designed to cushion households and businesses against soaring energy costs, the targeted interventions kick in on November 4, 2026. Under the relief framework, the diesel levy will drop by R3.00 per litre ($0.16), while the petrol levy will be reduced by R1.50 per litre ($0.08).

This maximum level of relief will remain in effect through December 1, 2026. From December 2, 2026, until January 5, 2027, the subsidies will taper down to a reduction of R1.50 per litre ($0.08) for diesel and R1.00 per litre ($0.05) for petrol before normalising.

The short-term intervention aims to lower logistics and daily commute expenses over the high-volume holiday period, providing a timed economic buffer while avoiding permanent structural hits to national revenue.
