South Africa’s (SA) Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube, will address the media in Pretoria today to outline steps to improve the security of matriculation examinations.
She is set to release the interim findings from the investigation into the 2025 exam leak, which led to the suspension of two officials accused of stealing exam papers and a memo.
The breach reportedly involved twenty-six learners from seven Pretoria schools, who accessed leaked papers in English, Mathematics and Physical Science. The incident has sparked public concern. Education activist Hendrick Makaneta described it as a betrayal of learners, while the Freedom Front Plus warned that it undermines trust in the country’s public education system.
Department Spokesperson Terence Khala said the media briefing demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to transparency, accountability and safeguarding the credibility of the National Senior Certificate examinations. Gwarube is expected to detail the investigation’s findings, outline key recommendations, and explain the department’s planned measures to strengthen exam security and restore public confidence in the examination process.
