South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has begun a working visit to Mozambique for the 4th SA-Mozambique Bi-National Commission, a platform aimed at strengthening political, economic and security cooperation between the two neighbouring states.

Pretoria and Maputo share long-standing strategic and fraternal ties rooted in the struggle against colonialism and apartheid.

During the visit, Ramaphosa will also participate in the official launch of the Sasol Hydrocarbons Processing Integrated Infrastructure project in Inhassoro on Tuesday. The initiative is expected to further enhance energy cooperation and unlock new economic opportunities for both countries.

International Relations and Co-operation Minister, Ronald Lamola, emphasised the importance of Mozambique as a key partner in SA’s regional and global trade outlook.

“Mozambique is SA’s biggest trading partner on the African continent and the fourth globally. So you will understand this is one of the most strategic countries for us, also in relation to regional integration. Issues of cross-border crime and issues of regional security. So it is a strategic platform which we are looking forward to for the good bilateral relations,” Lamola said.

The Bi-National Commission is expected to review progress across several sectors, including energy, transport, trade, security and tourism.
