SANBS targets youth donor retention with new national engagement programmes

South Africa National Blood Service (SANBS) is introducing targeted engagement initiatives aimed at retaining young blood donors as they transition from high school into tertiary education and the workforce.

While high school blood drives remain a key source of collections across SA, the organisation faces a recurring challenge in maintaining donor participation once students graduate and relocate. The new programmes aim to keep young donors connected to the national network, allowing them to continue donating seamlessly regardless of where they study or work.

The strategy was mentioned in Johannesburg during the premiere of Why Blood Matters, a documentary exploring critical work, science, and human stories behind SA’s blood donation system.
