South African opposition criticises multi million rand police budget for June 30 deployment

The ActionSA party has strongly criticised the South African Police Service (SAPS) for setting aside R600 million ($33.3 million) to beef up security ahead of planned anti-illegal immigration protests on June 30.

Several civic movements have declared June 30 as a deadline for undocumented immigrants to leave the country. In response, SAPS announced a massive security deployment, including partnerships with private security companies, to maintain stability.

ActionSA’s Zandile Dabula has slammed the expenditure as an unnecessary waste of state resources, arguing that the government is panicking over an unconfirmed threat while neglecting everyday crime in communities.

“How did we even get to that R600 million when they don’t even know what is going to happen on the day?” Dabula questioned. “Nobody has said that we will be marching, nobody said that there is going to be violence. As ActionSA we don’t condone violence, but we are so against what the government is doing. People are unsafe in their communities on a daily basis.”
