Parliament says it has not received any correspondence from the official opposition MKP party regarding concerns over the safety of Members of Parliament serving on the Ad Hoc Committee probing alleged criminal infiltration and political interference in South Africa’s (SA) criminal justice system.

Parliamentary Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said on Thursday that no letter or formal notification had been received from the MKP. His response comes after the party’s Chief Whip, Colleen Makhubele, claimed she had written to the Speaker of the National Assembly to alert her to the reported kidnapping of MKP MP Vusi Shongwe.

Shongwe, who serves as an alternative member on the Ad Hoc Committee, was allegedly abducted on Wednesday night. According to Makhubele, his three mobile phones were confiscated, and he was forced to pay a substantial sum of money before being released.

The MKP has raised concerns that the incident may be linked to the committee’s work, which involves sensitive testimony and explosive allegations about criminal infiltration within state institutions.

Parliament has urged any MP who feels unsafe, or any party with concerns about the security of its representatives, to follow the established procedures for reporting incidents. Officials say they remain committed to ensuring the safety of all MPs, particularly those serving on committees handling high-risk or politically sensitive matters.
