SA Acting Police Minister orders Kempton Park security operations

Law enforcement authorities in South Africa (SA) will place Kempton Park, a major city in Gauteng province, under lock down following the discovery of another woman’s body in the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area, bringing the total number of victims found in the region over the past two months to eight.

Addressing the media in Gauteng, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia announced the heightened security operations alongside Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane. Police confirmed that one suspect has been arrested while another remains at large, with a R400 000 ($21 978) reward offered for information leading to a conviction.

To address growing safety concerns across Kempton Park, which hosts O.R. Tambo International Airport on the East Rand of the Witwatersrand, and neighboring districts, police leadership confirmed that a multidisciplinary team of specialised investigators has been deployed alongside expanded high-visibility patrols.

“In addition to the establishment of this multidisciplinary team of highly competent investigators and professionals, we will massively expand visibility through Operation Shanela in Kempton Park and the surrounding areas,” Cachalia stated during the briefing. “In the weeks ahead, the police will lock down this area. In the coming weeks, community will see the presence of the SA Police Service, and we will mobilise all necessary law enforcement capabilities.”
