South Africa’s (SA) Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu has admitted that the SA Police Service is battling with corruption and factionalism in its top structures
Mchunu appeared for a fourth day before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee yesterday. The committee is investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system made by the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mchunu says drastic change is needed to overhaul the police in order to restore public confidence.
“Down the line, you would have needed measures, maybe not a wholesale overhaul, but you need to overhaul certain aspects of the SA police if you want to gain confidence. One is to say, what are the norms and standards of a police station? Policing is what people see on a daily basis,” he said.
