South African (SA) authorities have rescued three young women from Botswana, aged between 20 and 23, who were suspected victims of human trafficking. The women were intercepted at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday.
Police say the women had been lured by a trafficking syndicate with false promises of employment in Sierra Leone.
According to Spokesperson Amanda van Wyk, the victims were en route from Botswana to Sierra Leone via SA and Nairobi when they were rescued by INTERPOL NCB Pretoria and the Germiston Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit.
A preliminary report indicates that the Botswana High Commission in Pretoria alerted INTERPOL, which assisted in tracing the missing victims.
