South African (SA) Police, working with crime-fighting partners, have seized counterfeit and illicit goods worth over $21 million during nationwide operations in December.
The raids took place in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape provinces.
Nearly 600 000 items were confiscated, including designer clothing, sports apparel, footwear, jewellery, cosmetics, cell phone accessories, illicit pharmaceuticals worth over R1 million ($55 000), as well as illegal cigarettes, liquor, and other consumables.
Police arrested 33 suspects on charges ranging from dealing in counterfeit goods and drug possession to violations of the Medicine Control Act, Liquor Act, Second-Hand Goods Act, and Immigration Act, police Spokesperson Amanda van Wyk confirmed.
