The group was arrested in June 2025 in connection with allegations surrounding Mokwele’s appointment to the rank of brigadier in 2024 despite having no prior policing background.
The case centred on claims that Mokwele’s promotion was irregular.
In a statement, SAPS Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the withdrawal of the charges would allow the senior officers to focus fully on their duties. “The SAPS is confident that the withdrawal of the charges will allow the senior officers to refocus fully on their mandate of preventing and combating crime,” Mathe said.
Mathe said Khumalo would continue leading intelligence-driven operations aimed at tackling serious and organised crime. “As Divisional Commissioner of Crime Intelligence and Project Manager of the Political Killings Task Team, Khumalo will continue to focus on strengthening intelligence-driven operations, dismantling highly organised criminal networks, disrupting criminal syndicates and ensuring that actionable intelligence supports targeted police operations,” Mathe said.
