The former Chairperson of South Africa’s (SA) Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Agriculture and Land Affairs, Rubben Mohlaloga, has been ordered to report to the correctional authorities to start his 20-year sentence
The sentence was handed down in February 2019 but he appealed against it. The state approached the High Court in Pretoria and successfully opposed Mohlaloga’s extension of bail. An investigation revealed that $345.397 grant had been irregularly paid to an entity on the verbal instruction of the then Chief Executive Officer of the Land Bank, without following the approval procedures. Police Spokesperson, Katlego Mogale says the Land Bank alerted authorities on the matter.
The matter was brought to the attention police by the Land Bank, which was responsible for managing and administering the AgriBEE Fund valued at $345.397, a fund allocated by Parliament to promote the empowerment of previously disadvantaged farmers. Mohlaloga who was member of Parliament between 2007 and 2009, in his capacity as the then Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee, was among the individuals who personally benefitted from the illicitly approved grant. He was subsequently found guilty on one count of fraud and one count of money laundering, resulting in his sentencing on February 14, 2019,” he said.
