Gauteng Premier details provincial plan to combat femicide crisis

South Africa’s (SA) Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi will outline the province’s progress in tackling gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) this Sunday, following a series of high-profile murders in the region.

The update comes after the bodies of at least 13 women were discovered in the east of Johannesburg between July and September, an outcry that prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to issue a directive for urgent intervention and announce a four-point national plan.

In response to the Presidency’s directive, Lesufi unveiled a targeted provincial action plan. Key measures included tighter monitoring of police stations, an audit of unresolved cases involving women and children, audits of unsafe public spaces, recovery plans for stalled investigations, increased support for shelters, reduction of forensic backlogs, and a crackdown on unlicensed liquor outlets.

Speaking at a scheduled media briefing, Lesufi will detail the concrete milestones achieved so far under the provincial response while setting out additional measures to strengthen crime prevention and safeguard residents, particularly women and children.
