South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled an urgent four-point national plan designed to strengthen the criminal justice system and accelerate government intervention against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
Addressing the national emergency, Ramaphosa outlined key measures that include strengthening legal frameworks, deploying dedicated police response units, expanding emergency funding for victim support centers, and institutionalising community-level prevention programs nationwide.
Ramaphosa highlighted that gender-based violence remains a profound crisis threatening human rights, noting that state resources will be reallocated to ensure rapid prosecution, improve police training on sexual offences, and provide comprehensive psycho-social care for survivors.
