South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended the appointment of Roelf Meyer as SA’s next Ambassador to the United States (US), saying he is more than qualified to take on the role.
Meyer’s appointment comes after the post remained vacant since March 2025, following the expulsion of former Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool.
Addressing the media, Ramaphosa said Meyer is a loyal and patriotic SA citizen, who has distinguished himself in a number of areas where he has worked in.
Meyer was a Cabinet Minister in the initial Government of National Unity led by the late President Nelson Mandela.
