The adopted G20 declaration on critical minerals aims to create a more stable and equitable supply chain for these vital resources by promoting value addition in producer countries like those in Africa. The framework will focus on protecting supply chains from disruption, increasing exploration in developing countries, and ensuring that the wealth generated benefits the countries of origin through local processing and manufacturing, not just raw material exports. South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa says these minerals need to benefit the countries that they are extracted from.
“The G20 also agreed that the critical minerals that the world need should benefit those countries where those minerals are found and extracted. there was an agreement that countries like SA should be able to process and beneficiate the minerals they mine before selling them to other countries as finished products, this will create jobs for our people and the agreements reflected in the G20 declarations are just the beginning and we will continue to advocate for global progress and on these and other priorities,” he said.
