South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) commitment to promoting peace and stability across the region, following his election as interim Chairperson of the regional bloc.
Ramaphosa was elected during a virtual extraordinary summit held on Thursday evening, convened in response to recent political unrest in Madagascar. He will serve in the position until August next year.
Addressing the summit, Ramaphosa said the people of the region continue to look to their leaders for action that delivers tangible progress toward SADC’s long-term goals.
“The people of our region continue to look to us for leadership that delivers the vision of a peaceful, inclusive and industrialised region, which we have set ourselves to realise in 2050,” he said. “But they cannot wait for that anticipated year to fulfil their current needs. This meeting must therefore serve as a platform to deeply reflect and collectively come up with pragmatic solutions.”
