South Africa’s (SA) Cyril Ramaphosa says the opening of the Senqu Bridge is a testament to the longstanding collaboration between SA and Lesotho.

Ramaphosa made the remarks alongside King Letsie III and Samuel Matekane during the official launch of the bridge in Mokhotlong. The bridge is regarded as a landmark achievement under Phase Two of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.

Ramaphosa thanked Lesotho for making its water resources available to SA, highlighting the importance of the project to the country’s development.

“The Lesotho Highlands Water Project is one of the most ambitious and successful transboundary water projects in the world. It is the largest investment SA has ever made outside its borders. SAA is a water-scarce country and the waters of Lesotho’s highlands are vital to our country’s development. We remain forever grateful to the great Basotho nation for making water resources available to us,” said Ramaphosa.

He added that the project continues to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
