In a statement issued on behalf of the SA government and its citizens on Monday, Ramaphosa described Mogae as a respected regional leader whose legacy would continue to shape Botswana and the Southern African region. Ramaphosa also conveyed condolences to former First Lady Barbara Gemma Mogae, the bereaved family and Botswana’s current President Duma Boko.
“As South Africans, we embrace the people of Botswana in our shared grief at the passing of a great leader of the Republic of Botswana and the Southern African Development Community,” Ramaphosa said.
He praised Mogae for his commitment to democracy, good governance and regional cooperation, saying he had strengthened ties between South Africa and Botswana during his years in office. “We have lost a dear neighbour and friend who shared our values of democracy, good governance and fraternal partnership,” Ramaphosa added.
Mogae served as Botswana’s President from 1998 to 2008 and was widely credited with helping maintain economic stability and democratic governance in one of Africa’s most politically stable nations.
Ramaphosa noted that Mogae’s passing comes during Africa Month, a period in which the continent reflects on African unity and leadership. He said the former leader’s life and leadership embodied principles that contributed significantly to the development of Botswana and the wider Southern African region.
