South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has moved to reassure South Africans that the stability and functioning of the SA Police Service (SAPS) will be safeguarded, following confirmation that National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has been served with a summons to appear in court.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ramaphosa noted the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) confirmation of a summons for Masemola in connection with an ongoing investigation that has already led to the arrest of 12 senior police officers. The NPA has not yet disclosed the specific charges the Commissioner is facing.
Masemola is expected to appear in court on April 21. Meanwhile, several of the arrested senior officers appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court this week on corruption‑related charges linked to a multi‑million dollar police contract. The matter has renewed public scrutiny of SAPS leadership and procurement practices.
Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya stressed that Ramaphosa would act strictly within legal prescripts in dealing with the Commissioner’s situation.
“President Ramaphosa will address the matter concerning General Masemola in accordance with the law,” Magwenya said. He added that the President, working closely with the Minister of Police, remained “committed to ensuring that the SAPS remains stable and able to continue fulfilling its police mandate”.
