South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended the rapid response efforts by the governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda following the recent Ebola outbreak in the region.

Speaking in his role as the African Union Champion on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, Ramaphosa also praised neighbouring countries, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organisation for their coordinated handling of the outbreak.

He said Africa has developed the experience, institutional capacity and determination needed to confront public health emergencies such as Ebola.

Ramaphosa added that regional co-operation and swift intervention remain critical in preventing the further spread of the virus across the continent.
