Ramaphosa says the G20 has pledged to extend support to low and middle-income countries.
South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on all G20 leaders to urge the global community to extend a hand to all countries with significant challenges to rebuilding.
In his closing remarks during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Nasrec, Johannesburg, on Sunday, Ramaphosa says the G20 has pledged to extend support to low and middle-income countries as they confront debt vulnerabilities.
He adds that when SA took up the G20 presidency, it pledged to mobilise and strengthen disaster resilience and response, saying climate-induced natural disasters spare no country.
Ramaphosa says their toll weighs heavily on those who don’t have the means to rebuild.
‘G20 Declaration more than words’
Closing the global meeting in Johannesburg, Ramaphosa says the G20 Declaration represents more than words, describing it as a commitment to concrete actions that will improve lives around every part of the globe.
Ramaphosa says SA has used the presidency to place the priorities of Africa and the Global South firmly at the heart of the G20 agenda, building on the developmental agenda of previous presidencies, namely Indonesia, India, and Brazil.
Ramaphosa has added that priority has mostly been given to developing economies.
