South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa says government plans to step up investment in resources and technology to combat Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
His comments come amid renewed public outrage over the deaths of nine women in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng Province in recent weeks, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding the cases and whether any of them are linked.
The killings have intensified calls for decisive government action and greater accountability in tackling violence against women.
“The women of SA should never have to live in fear of men, and that is precisely what we are now going to be addressing more forcefully, that men should never regard women as their playground, as people or citizens that they should harm or even kill.”
“We will be pulling out all stops to find these perpetrators, and the message must also go to men. Men must continue respecting women, honouring women. The women of our country are the builders of the nation. They carry this nation on their shoulders. Now to abuse them and to even kill them is a real blight against all of us.”
