South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa says a rogue criminal justice system can harm the country’s economic growth and job creation.
He says commissions such as the State Capture Commission and the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which are probing allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the police, will prove their value to South Africans.
Ramaphosa was speaking at the On the Record Jobs Summit in Cape Town, held under the theme “five million jobs in 10 years”, bringing together business leaders and civil society to explore solutions to unemployment.
He warned that high crime levels discourage investment and undermine economic stability.
Ramaphosa say, “What the Madlanga Commission is doing is giving us a great opportunity to overhaul our police system and our criminal justice system, to clean it out and remove all the thugs and rogues. In the end, pervasive crime breeds fear and mistrust, and has both a devastating human cost and a direct economic impact.”
