South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed a ceasefire agreement involving the United States (US) and Iran, describing it as a positive step toward de‑escalation in the region.
The agreement provides for a two week pause ahead of a deadline set by US President Donald Trump, with negotiations expected to take place during this period.
Ramaphosa has reiterated SA’s long held position that dialogue remains the most effective path to peace, stressing that sustained engagement is essential to achieving a permanent end to the conflict.
“We are encouraged by the current initiatives and ongoing efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive end to the conflict in the Middle East. We welcome the announcement of a ceasefire and are hopeful that it will lay the foundation for a permanent resolution to the conflict.
SA once again calls for dialogue and mediation to prevent further loss of life and destruction of property, and to ensure a just, sustainable, and lasting peace”, Ramaphosa added.
