South Africa’s (SA) Gauteng Department of Health has raised concern over a growing number of high blood pressure cases among adults under the age of 45.
Health officials warn that many people are unaware of their blood pressure status, increasing the risk of late diagnosis and serious health complications.
High blood pressure, also known as Hypertension, is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it can develop without noticeable symptoms.
Department Spokesperson Steve Mabona urged residents to adopt healthier lifestyles and avoid habits linked to hypertension.
“We need to look at our lifestyle,” Mabona said. “Excessive use of alcohol needs to be reduced and people also need to limit their salt intake. It’s important to be more careful and more calculated about what we consume.”
The department is encouraging regular health screenings and early testing to help prevent complications linked to untreated high blood pressure, including heart disease and stroke.
