The Premier of Gauteng Province in South Africa (SA), Panyaza Lesufi, says the provincial government is stepping up its multi-agency response to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) following an urgent crisis meeting with regional mayors, municipal managers, and law enforcement agencies.
Briefing the media in Johannesburg following directives issued by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Lesufi announced the establishment of a dedicated provincial committee on GBVF.
The specialised task team will meet weekly on Wednesdays to monitor case numbers, track individual recovery action plans, and resolve operational failures at police stations, specifically targeting lost case dockets, protection order delays, bail-related safety measures, and family communications. The province will also provide targeted support to affected local municipalities, with immediate operational focus placed on Ekurhuleni.
