South Africa (SA) police have recovered a stolen vehicle following a shootout with suspected smugglers near the Beitbridge Border Post.

Authorities say the vehicle was being taken across the border into Zimbabwe when officers tried to stop it. The suspects allegedly opened fire, triggering a gun battle with police and soldiers.

Police Spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says no officers were injured during the incident.

The suspects then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, crossing into Zimbabwe while continuing to shoot. Zimbabwean officials were alerted and carried out a search, but the suspects were not found.

The grey Toyota Prado has been recovered and seized as investigations continue.
