South Africa (SA) has returned ancestral human remains and a centuries-old stone carving of the Zimbabwe Bird to Zimbabwe in a ceremony held in Cape Town.

Eight coffins draped in Zimbabwean flags were displayed during the handover event, which was attended by officials from both countries.

The Zimbabwe Bird is a sacred national symbol, long associated with the country’s cultural and historical identity.

Officials say little is known about the human remains, except that they were unethically exhumed and taken for research during the colonial era.
