The South African (SA) Rugby has sent its condolences to the family of Lions lock Hyron Andrews, who died following an accident at the team’s hotel in La Rochelle, France.

The 31-year-old was in France with the Lions for their European Champions Cup match scheduled for Saturday. He previously played for the Kwa Zulu Natal province Sharks and Sale Sharks in England and represented the Junior Springboks in 2015.

SA Rugby Union President Mark Alexander said: “This is terrible and distressing news; our hearts go out to Hyron’s family and the whole Lions rugby community.”

He extended his sympathies to Andrews’ wife, Maighlin, family, friends and teammates, describing his death as “a devastating loss”.

Lions Rugby Company Chief Executive Officer Rudolf Straeuli said: “We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron. He was not only a gifted rugby player, but also a cherished member of our Lions family, having recently joined us this season.”

Straeuli also extended condolences to Maighlin, their young sons, Hendrix and Emerson, and the entire Andrews family.
