SA anti-immigration protesters burn scrapyard outside Durban Home Affairs office

In South Africa (SA), a scrapyard allegedly belonging to a foreign national was set alight outside the Department of Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre in Durban during a violent protest against the processing of asylum applications.

The incident forced the Refugee Reception Centre to shut its doors for the day, while heavy police forces deployed to the scene dispersed the crowd and established a visible presence to restore order.

Demonstrators expressed growing frustration with national immigration policies, alleging that public services prioritise foreign nationals over SA citizens and calling for stricter border controls and application vetting.

Police remain on high alert in the area to prevent further violence and monitor potential flare-ups.
