The SPAR Proteas rewrote their own record books on Sunday evening, powering past Tonga 96–42 in their second match of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The 96-goal total tops South Africa’s (SA) previous record of 92 goals at the Games.
Coming off a strong win against Malawi the day before, SA kept their momentum going against a Tongan side struggling to recover from an opening loss to world number one Australia. The two teams had previously only met once, during the 2023 Netball World Cup.
Head coach Jenny van Dyk says she was pleased with how clinical the attack looked compared to their opener, where the team felt a bit one-dimensional. She added that while the defence really found its rhythm in the second quarter to build momentum, the priority moving forward is to hit that level right from the opening whistle.
