South Africa (SA) continues to make waves on the international stage at the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, as the country’s young athletes proudly fly the national flag high.
Adding to the country’s growing medal tally, team SA secured two more medals on day three, claiming gold in rowing and silver in swimming.
The outstanding achievements highlight the talent, dedication and determination of SA’s young sporting stars, proving that the country is a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.
A young Hilton College rower, son of seven-time Dusi Canoe Marathon champion Martin Dreyer, has made history just 15 months into his rowing journey.
Callum Dreyer clinched team SA’s first gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games after an outstanding performance in the final of the men’s solo beach sprint race.
Dreyer turned an event that was completely unknown to him, to Youth Olympic gold as he won three races, the quarterfinals, semi-finals and the final, in quick succession.
He cruised to the first gold medal for team SA after defeating Spaniard Diego Molina Martinez in the final. Dreyer says it’s hard work that paid off.
SA’s success in the pool continued as Chanel Veldsman claimed her second medal at the Youth Olympic Games, securing silver in the 100 meters breaststroke, just a day after winning bronze in the 200 meters breaststroke.
