Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, has released the names of Members of Parliament (MP) nominated by political parties to serve on the committee that will consider impeachment proceedings against South Africa’s (SA) President, Cyril Ramaphosa.
Political parties were required to submit their nominations by last Friday’s deadline, following a recent court ruling directing Parliament to establish the committee.
The committee’s formation stems from a Constitutional Court judgment earlier this month, which ruled that Parliament must establish an impeachment mechanism to assess prima facie evidence relating to the alleged theft of foreign currency from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm in 2020.
Two parties, the Pan Africanist Congress and the GOOD Party, both of SA, have opted not to nominate members. They say their sole MPs also serve in the executive, making participation in the committee impractical.
The Patriotic Alliance and Al Jama-ah, both SA political parties, confirmed they will take part in the process.
The governing African National Congress has nominated nine permanent members and one alternate.
The impeachment committee is expected to examine the evidence before determining whether there are sufficient grounds for further parliamentary action against the President.
