The South African National Taxi Council ( SANTACO) is calling on the government to urgently provide clarity on the looming fuel price increases and to engage the taxi industry on possible relief measures.
With the fuel price hike set to take effect at midnight tonight, several petrol stations across the country have reported fuel shortages, prompting some outlets to cap the amount motorists are allowed to purchase.
This has led to panic buying, with long queues forming at filling stations as drivers rush to fill up ahead of the increase.
SANTACO has warned that the rising fuel costs will place additional pressure on the taxi industry.
The organisation says the fuel hike is likely to be passed on to commuters in the form of higher transport fares, further straining household budgets already under pressure.
