SA is set to connect roughly 50 rural villages to electricity over the next four years

South Africa (SA) is set to connect roughly 50 rural villages to electricity over the next four years through innovative solar micro-grid technology, the country’s Minister of Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has revealed.

The announcement was made during the launch of the Madimbo-Mabvete micro-grid solar project in Niani, near Musina in Limpopo province. The project is expected to benefit 600 households in the Mabvete and Madimbo villages.

“We plan to accelerate this programme, connecting more villages at a faster pace,” Ramokgopa said. “Our goal is to reach at least 50 villages in the next four years, and ideally, we will surpass this to ensure that even more people gain access to electricity and telecommunications.”

The initiative is part of a wider effort to extend electricity to rural communities, using sustainable and forward-looking energy solutions to improve both living standards and connectivity in SA’s remote areas.
