SA tourism sector is facing fresh pressure
South Africa’s (SA) tourism sector is facing fresh pressure after reports emerged that travellers from several African countries are cancelling trips in response to recent anti-migrant protests and attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The development threatens to tarnish the reputation of one of Africa’s most celebrated tourism destinations.
In 2025 the World Travel Awards named Cape Town, Western Cape Province, as Africa’s Leading City Destination, while Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, also ranked among the continent’s top tourism hubs.
However, growing concerns over the safety and treatment of foreign nationals are raising questions about whether SA can maintain its appeal to African travellers, who make up the country’s largest tourism market.
