The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) says it wants President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) to move beyond broad commitments and set out clear steps to tackle unemployment, poverty and slow economic growth.
Speaking ahead of the address at Cape Town City Hall, COSATU Parliamentary Co-ordinator Matthew Parks said the country cannot accept continued weak growth and soaring joblessness.
Parks said the federation expects government to prioritise rebuilding state capacity, improving public services and driving economic expansion, with a target of lifting growth from about one percent to at least three percent within two years.
He stressed that restoring the ability of institutions such as Home Affairs, schools and the police to function effectively is central to improving the lives of citizens and rebuilding confidence in the state.
