South Africa’s (SA) major labour unions have condemned a rise in anti-migrant sentiment, warning against attempts to blame foreign nationals for the country’s deepening unemployment crisis and economic challenges.

Speaking at the National Economic Development and Labour Council, labour federations called for a lawful approach to undocumented migration while strongly rejecting acts of vigilantism.

The unions have also urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to place two key state-run worker benefit funds under administration, citing allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

“Organised labour has cautioned that workers planning to participate in the national action on the June 30 will not enjoy the benefits of a protected strike as the action is not convened by recognised labour federations.”
