Students at Stellenbosch University in South Africa’s (SA) Western Cape province are expected to take to the streets today in a 16-kilometre march to raise critical funds and awareness for the country’s growing student debt crisis.
Organised under the auspices of the university’s Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), the initiative aims to provide financial relief to ensure deserving students are not forced to drop out due to outstanding fees. Now in its fifth year, the annual walk coincides intentionally with National Youth Day commemorations, mirroring the historic sacrifices of the 1976 generation by addressing the economic barriers locking today’s youth out of the future.
Organisers have framed the march as an urgent call to action, highlighting that structural inequalities continue to choke social mobility for millions of young South Africans decades after the dawn of democracy.
Participants in today’s procession will be addressed by several prominent figures, including Professor Thuli Madonsela, the Director of the CSJ and former Public Protector, who will speak on the intersection of economic justice, education access, and national development.
