Adverse climate conditions in South Africa (SA) continue to affect communities across the country, with persons with disabilities among those most vulnerable.
The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has called for stronger measures to protect the rights of people living with disabilities as the country experiences increasingly severe weather linked to climate change, including storms, flooding and extreme heat.
Department Spokesperson Cassius Selala said these conditions disproportionately affect persons with disabilities, who already face systemic barriers to access, participation and protection.
He warned that climate change is expected to intensify extreme weather events, increase health risks and disrupt livelihoods, highlighting the need for inclusive disaster preparedness and response.
