South Africa aims to advance human rights on the United Nations Human Rights Council

According to Supra Mahumapelo, Chairperson of South Africa’s (SA) Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Co-operation, the country aims to advance human rights on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for 2026–2028 through multilateral co-operation, promoting stable economies, and ensuring access to essential services rather than acting alone.

SA secured a seat on the UNHRC for the 2026–2028 term, pledging to work collectively with member states to uphold human rights, resolve conflicts through engagement, and strengthen stability, particularly across Africa.

Mahumapelo pointed out that the council’s effectiveness depends on members respecting its principles and collaborating on solutions to crises, including those in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The country plans to prioritise evidence-based, people-centred policies while advancing multilateral approaches to global and regional challenges.
