South Africa’s (SA) International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola, has warned SA citizens to prepare for a possible worst-case scenario as diplomatic tensions with the United States (US) continue to escalate.
The warning follows Washington’s decision to impose visa restrictions on some SA officials over allegations of race-based discrimination and plans to expropriate land without compensation, claims rejected by SA government.
Lamola was speaking in New York on Monday, ahead of the 81st session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, the annual gathering of UN member states, which begins this week.
During the interview, Lamola, warned citizens to prepare for the worst as relations with the US continue to deteriorate.
This followed Washington’s recent announcement of visa restrictions against some SA government officials, citing concerns over what it described as discriminatory reforms an allegation SA government continues to reject.
Lamola said the dispute is centred on SA’s sovereignty, including its policies on Black Economic Empowerment, land reform and foreign policy.
