Mounting public frustration over deteriorating municipal infrastructure has seen nearly three-quarters of South Africans (SA) express active disapproval of government water and sanitation delivery, as clean water shortages become increasingly severe across the country.
According to Afrobarometer, 73% of citizens now actively disapprove of municipal water and sanitation delivery, with the proportion of South Africans reporting frequent water cuts having doubled over the past decade.
The data shows that 60% of households experienced clean water shortages over the past year, propelling water supply to the third most urgent issue citizens want government to address, behind only unemployment and crime.
The report further highlights stark regional inequalities, noting that urban households are more than twice as likely as rural dwellers to access piped water, while sewage system coverage stands at 73% in urban neighborhoods compared to just 7% in rural areas.
