SA accepts African Commission report highlighting concerns over undocumented migration, GBVF

South African (SA) government has welcomed the preliminary findings released by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights following its recent fact-finding mission on human rights and migration.

According to the Department of International Relations and Co-operation, the Commission commended SA’s robust constitutional frame and legal protections aimed at safeguarding refugees, asylum seekers, and other vulnerable migratory groups.

However, the Commission’s report highlighted pressing domestic socio-economic challenges, citing persistent concerns over undocumented migration, high levels of crime, poverty, unemployment, and systemic gender-based violence and femicide. The report also noted recurring incidents of community hostility towards foreign nationals.

Addressing the findings, the Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi, stressed that managing complex regional migration dynamics requires enhanced, co-ordinated effort among state institutions, local communities, and international partners.

“SA remains steadfast in its commitment to managing migration in a lawful, orderly, and humane manner, while actively working with regional bodies to address the underlying root causes of forced displacement and economic migration,” Kubayi stated.
