Team South Africa (SA) added two more medals to their tally at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar on Monday, with swimmer Chanel Veldsman claiming bronze in the girls’ 200m breaststroke and the men’s rugby sevens team securing silver.
Veldsman delivered an impressive performance in the pool, finishing third in the final after qualifying as the third-fastest swimmer to earn Team SA’s second individual medal of the Games.
The momentum carried onto the rugby pitch, where the men’s sevens side powered into the final with a commanding 24–12 victory over Argentina. In a thrilling gold-medal match, South Africa narrowly missed out on the top spot, falling 26–19 to France to settle for the silver medal.
The dual-medal haul lifted SA’s total tally at the Games to three. The surge follows Leah Markgraaff’s silver medal in the girls’ 400m freestyle on Sunday, while rower Callum Dreyer also advanced to the quarter-finals of the coastal beach sprints competition to round out a strong day for the national contingent.
